Measuring System Competence in Education for Sustainable Development

This paper presents the development of an instrument for assessment system competence in field Education Sustainable Development (ESD). Based on already existing, more complex model school subject geography, we have developed a test that refers to central themes and principles ESD using exclusively closed answer formats. Building results cognitive laboratories expert feedback from various fields, was (further) iterative process revision. We conducted quantitative pilot study with N = 366 8th 9th grade students. The indicate our successful—the overall yielded high reliability only very few items were not working as intended. Furthermore, difficulties appropriate ability levels students confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) suggest newly measures one dimension. As is compact, easy interpret, yet reliable, it particularly suitable monitoring purposes ESD.
